It is important to follow all linkage and lever installation instructions. The number one and two reasons for tuning errors are improper linkage installations and over tightened linkage nut, causing a binding in linkage assembly. Do not depend on the factory delivered settings. Check them before the carb is installed. All settings are done with choke disengaged or warmed up so that the choke is fully opened and disengaged.
This is done on automatic choke carburetors by first opening the choke butterfly by hand and inserting a wood block or wedge of some kind to hold open while the linkage is cycled linkage operated through its full movement to clear the choke cam. You will hear a metallic click as the cam is released. You can check the fast Idle screw under the choke assembly to confirm that it is not in contact with the choke fast idle cam.
Set the Idle stop screw speed screw see fig 1 by backing out the Idle speed screw until it is not in contact with the throttle stop lever. Cycle the linkage again to be sure that the linkage comes to close without any assistance.
Set the mixture screw see Fig 1 by first screwing in until the screw stops, bottoms out. Back out the screw 2 full turns. Start the engine, the engine will run very slowly more like a tractor.
As long as the engine stays running idle speed is not important at this point. The first thing to do is not set up the idle speed, but to set the idle mixture screw to lean best idle setting. The engine should pick up speed and begin to smooth out.
Use your ear, not a scope or tuning instruments at this point. You want to tune the engine by sound. Adjust to best, fastest and smoothest running point. Now that the mixture screw is at its best running location, you can adjust the idle speed the screw.
Check and set idle to your driving preference. Put the car in gear and apply slight load, AC on and set the Idle as you like it. Recheck timing and vacuum hook ups. Page of 1. Filtered by:. Hello everyone. I'm having an idle problem on my Toyota Corolla station wagon 3TC engine. Here is what's happening. Very simple. It won't idle. Normally, the accelerator kind of sticks when I even barely touch the accelerator. Solved that problem after finding out there is no real solution other than adding a spring.
But a couple of weeks ago, I was driving though a large city, and all of a sudden, when I came to a stop sign or light, the engine would die. I've checked all the vacuum lines, changed the fuel filter, and made sure the choke isn't stuck. Another symptom is it seems to run rich when not idling, as I slightly smell fuel.

It just doesn't sound normal. Anyway, I'm a pretty good home mechanic, as i grew up with a dad who was a pro mechanic his entire life. I'm just not that familiar with carbs. Set idle speed to setting on emmision sticker which is typically around rpm. Reset the idle speed again. Then allow the engine to fully cool or remove the choke element and put it in the freezer. Initiate the fast idle cam by pumping the gas pedal twice then start the car.

Re: stock carburetor running too rich? I rebuilt my carb and the thing was still too rich. I ended up finding a DFT 9A redline weber smog legal from ebay. They are super rare, but if you see one in the parts yard grab it and rebuild. The carb works the same way the other webers do. I am curious in what makes the stock carb richen up above idle because then I can fix 2 that I have now. Don't overlook the simple and obvious. Check your plugs - if running rich they will likely be pretty fouled up and black.

The needle could be stuck causing excessive fuel into the float. Where is your idle mixture screw set to? Is it all the way out? I think I'm gonna remove the smog components and install a Weber! That being said out of the millions of vacuum hoses which ones do I keep and which do I remove? The ones for the Distributor advance. Sooo not that hard. Now they run rich and have to jet it cause they come for like a stage two engine build stock.
Stock 3tc carbs came with to jets and can be made progressive. But thats another chapter. If you want performance try to go low for the primary jet like to cause you have a stock motor, right? The air is the tricky part, the more air does not make it leaner it just means you can use more fuel.
LOL so go from to The secondary Im still working on to get right. The closest will be gas and the same air as the primary or close to it. Remember the less air the less it will hesitate in upper RPM, the more air the more gas you have to put for it not to hesitate in upper RPMs. Its tricky to tune but you can use them on stock or rebuilt engines with upgrades.
